The City of the Young and the Restless represents about 65,000 individuals, or 6.6% of the population living in Ottawa's most central downtown neighbourhoods. Residents are highly mobile renters; about 6 out of 10 people move every 5 years. Housing here is overwhelmingly apartment buildings (80%), and includes buildings that were both built before 1961 and within the past few years. Many residents are young professionals without families, and a high proportion are employed in government jobs. Residents tend to work near where they live, and commutes are highly defined by public transit, walking or biking. In general, many residents are likely in the beginning of a stable public service or private sector career, with a university education and a plan to purchase a house outside of the downtown core.
